This module tries to reflect on what disability is, what types there are, the factors that affect them, their characteristics, causes, how to identify them and what cognitive impairment is.

What are we talking about when we talk about disabilities?

Currently, 16% of the world’s population suffers from a significant disability. There are different types of disability (physical, mental, intellectual, sensory, multi-disability) and there are different factors that affect them (structural, social, health, risk, health care system).

Intellectual disabilities

In order to have a disability, a number of criteria must be met, and depending on this they can be classified as mild, moderate, severe and profound. There are some characteristics shared by people with disabilities

Cognitive decline

Cognitive impairment is a decline in cognitive functions that is sometimes reversible and other times permanent and has multiple causes. It is something we should learn to communicate with.
